When i start Firefox in (its) safe mode, that doesn't help, so it's not 
due to a buggy extension.

Even uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader didn't help.

BTW, i'd forgotten my advice sent to this mailing list to always 
uninstall all programs before installing newer versions, especially with 
Adobe products. Apparently the automatic updates create a mess. In fact, 
even manually uninstalling produced a mess. It left folders for 6.0 and 
7.0 with everything inside. What a sloppy company. I'm thinking of 
permanently uninstalling Adobe and instead using the smaller and faster 
Foxit http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
