[pchelpers] Re: PCI Modem

In general PCI modems require a processor of 150MHz or greater to work.
They use the CPU to control timing functions, placing a load on the
system. The MMX relates to multimedia features of the Cyrix processors
made by IBM. Although they were excellent in their time, the older ones
did not have these features. Really, if your old external modem still
goes, you might be better off using a working serial port card instead
to replace the dead one. The machine will go faster and you won't have
to replace the motherboard. (getting AT style boards for your case may
be difficult now- they are quite out of date).
