Hello everyone!
I protect my system with tow protectors. The first is a surge protector that
is supposed to sense a strike and take appropriate action. I live in an area
where we have pretty intense storms and have yet to have a problem. Most
computers are hurt through the phone line before the electrical line. The
protection for the electrical system is far better than the phone system. I
suggest that everyone that uses a modem, make sure that you have a new
junction box as supplied by your local phone company which affords more
protection than the older style junction boxes. This is where the telephone
cable enters the home before being distributed around the house. Secondly, I
use a UPS, uninterruptible power supply, this affords the protection against
lighting as it senses spikes in the electrical line and will disconnect my
system from the electrical line (120 Volts) and run it for about 4 hours.
The safest by far is to UNPLUG your phone line and electrical cord from your
system as this makes it almost impossible from a storm ever hurting your
system.
Have a nice day!
John F
