I have the cable connected directly to my computer. The only channels
that I'm able to view/record are those that I'm paying for. Most (or
all) TVs sold in the US now are "cable ready", meaning that a box
supposedly isn't needed. I have no idea how this applies to PC tuners,
though.

I have a cable box, but I don't use it at present; it has something to
do with HDTV, as far as I know. I think it converts HDTV signals so
that they can be viewed on an older NTSC TV.

If you have a TV, you should be able to stick a splitter in after the
cable box, so that the signal goes to both the TV and to the PC tuner.
Your contract may require paying for a separate box for each, but as
far as I know, there's no technical requirement. Your cable company
may be handling things quite differently from the way mine does.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
