Hi Gerald,

If they want you to disable antivirus and firewall, I'd be very
suspicious. This could be either a sign of a tech who has experience
with people who don't know how to configure their own firewall, or it
may indicate something nefarious. Many programs are able to configure
the Windows built-in firewall; it's not difficult. Third-party
firewalls are another matter. I can't think of much good reason to
*routinely* disable antivirus.

Is this for a network camera? I don't know why antivirus would be a
problem, and I doubt that the firewall would be a problem either.

Go to http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer, and it should detect and
update your Flash version for you; you'll need to approve it before
it'll install. Be sure to DE-select the Google toolbar. 9.0.124.0 is
an important security fix. Vista has nothing to do with Flash, aside
from possibly bundling it (I don't know if they still do). It looks
like they've finally added support for 64-bit versions of Windows.

Go to http://secunia.com/software_inspector, click the Start Now
button, then click the Start button, to see if the software on your
computer is up-to-date. Note that it will often report old versions of
Flash and Java that are still on your system; old Flash is not always
removed, and old Java is never removed; apparently they can still be
exploited, so you should remove them. I've also seen it report Office
as being out of date, even though WindowsUpdate and OfficeUpdate don't
report problems. If it says they're out of date, you should assume
that it is telling the truth..

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
