I was hoping for sytematic instructions on how to back up data files.  Netscape
is one glob of mass that if accumulates for some time the data may not fit on a
CD-ROM.

Okay, since your prefer Thunderbird exactly how is the data files backed up? 
Are there any instructions on Firefox website on how to do?
