First off, this isn't a serious problem. The characters are normally
present in text files and messages for formatting reasons (ever since
ASCII was invented).
You may fine the effect occurs when you send mail to one address, but
not another. If so, the one receiving it is treating these characters
differently from the way your system does. This might typically occur if
one uses plain text while another has html, mime or javascipt messaging.
It is the result of one messaging system munging the format of another.
Getting rid of it may require you to try different combinations of
messaging setup on your email system. Doing this can make things better
or worse for yourself or different people you write to.
As a general rule I find setting for plain text only works (until I get
html mail).
