If it's a USB camera, have you tried a different USB port? Moving a
device to another port often seems to cause Windows to see the device
anew.
I agree with the card reader suggestions; I have an older camera that
uses a serial cable, and when I was given a card reader, I found it to
be vastly simpler to simply plug the card reader in and plug the card
into the reader, than to plug the serial cable in, make sure the serial
port is turned on in the BIOS, install the software, etc. With the
card reader, I simply drag-n-drop the pictures from what looks like
another drive, and it's mch faster than the serial cable, too (the
speed difference probably will not be as noticeable for you).
