Wikipedia white-washers beware: Virgil Griffith is watching you.
Last August, Griffith, a graduate student at the California Institute of
Technology, released a simple piece of software code that tore the lid
of secrecy off the anonymous community of volunteers who edit the
nonprofit encyclopedia.
By matching users' IP addresses with the public database of addresses
registered to different corporations, Griffith's "Wikiscanner" revealed
widespread corporate meddling on Wikipedia, as companies attempted to
add marketing pitches to their own entries, or hide controversies.
