Web-based email services are pretty much a public sewer, as far as
spam is concerned. :(

Make sure that the spam protection is turned on. Hotmail and Yahoo
both have this, and gmail apparently does it automatically. This
causes most junk mail to go into a junk folder.

You may want to open a new account, with a semi-random name, for use
anywhere that it won't become public, such as for financial
institutions or registering stuff. This will let you identify phishing
attempts.

Anything that gets used in groups, forums, regular email, etc. WILL
get spammed, so you may as well leave those alone.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
