[pchelpers] News: New Conficker worm active

Written by Kelly Gregor Tuesday, 14 April 2009

The new Conficker algorithm has been detected and is active, security
provider Symantec confirms.

The anti-virus provider said the network worm continued to be active
despite measures taken to shut it down.

The new algorithm was detected on April 8, a week after it was highly
publicised to be downloaded onto PCs around the world.

The new variant, Downadup (.E) is similar to the old worm’s
configuration. But Symantec said only PCs that had been already infected
with the .C variant were being targeted by the new algorithm.

The company said the main aim of the new worm was to update the former
variant with new features and drop Waledac binary into the infected
machines.
