Luann Lasalle, THE CANADIAN PRESS
MONTREAL - As the number of cases of swine flu grows around the world,
so does the flood of flu-tagged spam email and other potential threats
to personal computers.

Major news events, like the outbreak of the swine H1N1 virus as well as
other recent events such as the Olympics and the U.S. presidential race,
typically cause an increase in spam, antivirus software companies said
Friday.

"As soon as the general public is no longer concerned, then spammers
will stop using that campaign," said Stephan Chenette, manager of
security research at the California-based security software company
Websense Inc..

It's estimated than tens of thousands of spam emails have been sent
daily since the outbreak started, which began in Mexico and had led to
51 confirmed cases in Canada as of Friday.
