Another thing that helped was MS buying out, I understand, a small
neworking company that had a product called WebNet, if I recall
correctly.  I played with WebNet back when, and it was much easier to
set up a nework with it than it was with Microsoft or Novell, at the
time.  The problem with networks before that was that the server had
to be running before the workstations started up; if the server went
down and had to be restarted, the workstations did also.  WebNet had
peer-to-peer networking, which is what allows you to now share a drive
without having to reboot one or more systems.  That seemingly-minor
change is a big part of what makes networking so easy now.
