Having the same workgroup name is a convenience, not mandatory.

NetBIOS is a convenience also, not mandatory. TCP/IP is the only thing
needed for internet access. Can use either TCP/IP or NetBEUI on a
local network. For maximum safety, you would have TCP/IP for internet,
without file-sharing bound to it and with NetBIOS turned off, and have
NetBEUI for local use, with file-sharing bound to it. NetBEUI won't go
out past a router or switch, so you can use it for file sharing in a
home environment.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
