It sounds like a file association problem, but also a little like aging
in windows ME. Pity about this version is that it works well until its
files begin to age.
ME does not provide a feature like SFC to repair them the way 98 does
(prove me wrong please). Meantime things are fine until it dies.
Re-installing ME most likely overwrites your files in the process.
Alternatives:
Save your important stuff off the system (CD or USB stick). Then do one of:
Upgrade to XP or
reinstall with Win 98. You may need to format to do that. Can any others
on the list suggest better options?
