This is how I get a movie from my camcorder to my Computer.

My camcorder come with three types of connections:
1. RCA jacks that goes into my vcr, and my vcr goes into my Winfast Tv card.
2. RCA jacks to a  mini pin that  goes into the sound card for audio and 
s-video into the Winfast card.
3. Firewire

There are lot of programs out there that can see the winfast card or the 
firewire signal and save the movie to your hard-drive as a mpg file.
I use the firewire way cause then the data would be digital.
As I said before I do not convert my mpgs files to DVD format anymore. I 
just burn them to the DVD as a data file cause
all my DVD players plays mpg files.
Also the winfast program will burn the data from the camcorder right to 
a DVD but there will be no chance to edit it.
If you make it into a mpg file then you will be able to edit it with a 
program like "TMPGEnc" (freeware)
If you want a DVD with menus and such, the easiest program I found to 
use is the one that came with my Optorite Burner,
which is "My Sonic"
