[pchelpers] Name service providers?

I'm setting up my own server to host my site. It is nearly ready to
change over, but the domain registry uses a confusing term "name service
provider". On my current web host, the servers seem to have specific
names. Maybe it refers to which machine on the local network will
provide hosting, but at best this is unclear.
What if the IP is changed over, only to find the site disappears? Has
anyone got insight on this?
