Hi Ekhart & Eric,

Returned mail can usually be identified in one or both of the following ways:
1. The header contains: "Return-Path: <>"
2. The message is from "postmaster@"
These should be checked to be sure that you didn't get a return from
an email that you really did send.
Filtering can be used to identify probably-legitimate messages. My
email program filters out all of the custom email addresses that I use
(approximately 100 of them; I use a unique one for each site, but
constructed in such a way that a single filter can identify all of
them; an example is blablabla-wizard@xxxxxxxx, which can be easily
filtered by "-wizard@..."). Any custom email address that has been
compromised is filtered separately. Email from known addresses are
also pulled out and filed. The result is a number of folders which
contain no spam whatsoever, one folder which is all spam (compromised
addresses which I no longer use, or invalid addresses), and a small
number which contains email that the Bayesian filter may not have
removed all of the spam from.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
