Hi Jo, Inge & Jackie
Thank you all for your responses. Jo, I guess mine is different in that it's
not the One Touch model but the 3100 model. Anyway the user guide said no
driver is required for XP. I searched the user forum and it seems others are
having the same problem. It works fine with my Win98 machine though it's
250GB which surprised me because from what I understand Win98 wasn't
supposed to support anything larger than 80GB and that is the size of my
internal hard drive.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Jackie, I think it's not the USB port that
is at fault because my two other external hd (Fujitsu & Iomega) work
beautifully all the time. In fact my Iomega external drive is about 5 years
old and has never given me any problem at all. Both feel merely warm after
long hours plugged in. In fact my Iomega is permanently plugged into my
Win98 machine and I use this more often than my XP machine which I use
mainly for photo editing and viewing DVD movies!
I've called the vendor and they asked me to take it back to them for testing
and will exchange a good one for me if need be. Will do that Thursday
evening after work.
Thank you girls, for responding. Looks like the guys are too busy with more
important issues ;^)
Best regards
Tonia

Tonia: I also have a Maxtor One Touch 250GB ext. drive. My manual
says to install the software BEFORE you plug the drive into the USB
port. I have it running on my desktop and my laptop......both XP
Home. My drive tends to get very warm after being on a
while........so I only turn it on when needed. If I need it for a
long time......I turn a small fan directly on it to keep it cool. I
was told if left on a long time - it could burn it out. So I take no
chances.......it is great for backing up data.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
