I just saw this and I want to say that an external hard drive did burn out
on me. I lost a lot of data, because I kept backups on it.

Now I have a new one and I turn it on only when I need it. I have a clone on
there of my desktop. I never want to burn that one out again. 

The external hard drive is great. I would not want to do without it.

Tonia:  I also have a Maxtor One Touch 250GB ext. drive.  My manual says to
install the software BEFORE you plug the drive into the USB port.  I have it
running on my desktop and my laptop......both XP Home.  My drive tends to
get very warm after being on a while........so I only turn it on when
needed.  If I need it for a long time......I turn a small fan directly on it
to keep it cool.  I was told if left on a long time - it could burn it out.
So I take no chances.......it is great for backing up data.
