[pchelpers] Maxtor External HD problem

I recently bought a 250GB Maxtor external hard drive but Win XP couldn't
recgonize it. It said "unknown device" plugged into USB port or something to
that effect. But when I plugged this same drive into my Win98 machine, it
works like a charm! There's no driver for XP but required for Win98 which
I've installed. I tried going into Maxtor support website, but it's no help.
Forum users seem to have the same problem but no one could help either.
Could someone please help?
It's a SP3100 series USB drive and supposed to support all windows and linux
systems. My XP home machine is a P4 2.8GHz HP.
