No firewall normally asks if you want to allow an "incoming site". The
site doesn't "come in" and the incoming data coming from the site is in
response to authorised traffic. Firewalls normally don't even ask about
incoming traffic that is in response to authorised outgoing traffic.

All that firewalls normally ask is if you'll allow a program like
Firefox to access the Internet. I.e. they only ask about outgoing
traffic. Any incoming traffic that is a response to an outgoing
authorised request is automatically permitted, and all other incoming
traffic is automatically blocked.

When you access the Internet for the first time with a browser, for
example, some firewalls like Sygate will confusingly ask if you want to
permit the browser to access site 12.34.56.789. Once you allow that,
however, your browser has access to any site on the Internet, at least
in most firewalls. So what Sygate's question actually means is whether
you want to allow outgoing traffic from your browser. There are some
insane firewalls like Norman that actually only permit access to that
one permitted site by default, and i once spent a few minutes at
someone's house without figuring out how to change that default behavior.

It seems that you changed Sygate's default behavior and put a check mark
somewhere telling it to permit access only to individual sites. As
soon as i get to my old computer that has Sygate installed, i'll look
through the menus to find that setting, but i'm sure you can find it too.

BTW, i was very surprised to read the claims on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_firewall that firewalls are
basically unnecessary and more of a nuisance than a help. I'll have to
correct that article, and i'll probably have to first find some sources
i can quote because the authors seem very sure sure and/or opinionated.

Does this response mean you, Scott, have ar.atwola.com in your hosts
file as i do? I don't get any mention of 172.18.126.98 or
ads.web.aol.com. When i ping ads.web.aol.com, i get the same response as
the following for ar.atwola.com:

Pinging ar.atwola.com [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
     Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
     Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

In any case, all this talk about pinging and IP addresses is getting
away from the real issue, the fact that Sygate is blocking access to
certain sites. This is not correct default behavior and is due to an
incorrect setting in Sygate.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
