[pchelpers] ME to XP wiped the drive clean!

My friend today again tried to upgrade from ME to XP.
I don't know the details, but he wrote this:

The upgrade to XP failed badly so when I tried to reinstall ME, 
it wiped the whole drive clean. 
So I lost everything.

He's having to reinstall everything!

I sure wish someone could have given him some specific 
instructions on how to avoid this.

Anyway, if you come up with anything, please submit it.
