The best thing to do is to get another hard drive, install it as
master and the old drive as slave, install XP on the new drive (it
will be set up with NTFS unless he overrides that; NTFS is faster than
FAT32 and supports current large drives), reinstall any applications,
and copy over any needed data. Use the Documents and Settings
Migration Tool to copy over documents and preferences. It will run
faster with a fresh install; this has always been the case with any
new OS, but is even more true when talking about what is basically a
different OS, not just an upgrade. Having a separate drive gives the
possibility of setting the BIOS to boot from D:, letting him start up
ME again, in case he has a need for it. If the BIOS doesn't support
that, then he can open the case and remove the new drive and set the
old drive as master, and boot to ME that way.
