I used to have the exact same problem that you describe; browser (both
IE and FF) would fail to browse, but email and IM would keep working,
but they too would die eventually; another computer on the same
network showed no sign of problems, and the only thing that made it
work again was rebooting. I never found out the cause of it; it simply
stopped happening after a while.

If you want to tinker, you might try downloading AutoPatcherXP (from
wwww.autopatcher.com) and installing some or all of the recommended
Windows updates. That's the only thing that I can think of that I
might have done which might have fixed the problem.

1394 is Firewire; you can disable that connection. It was dropped from
Vista.

Internet Connection only appears when the computer can see your
router.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
