Hi Susan,
as far as I know the 1394 net adapter comes with Windows XP, my instructor
said it is actually the Microsoft firewire card, and you can disable it if you
want. I am just learning, so I don't know very much yet, but I am wondering if
when you go to IE - tools - Internet Options - connections - LAN settings - do
you have a check mark by "proxy"? You should only have the check mark on the
top where it says "automatically detect settings".

Unfortunately I don't know much about networking so I'm not sure how to
proceed here. Intermittently I keep losing my Internet connection on my
new XP system. I have all the latest Windows updates and latest
networking drivers, but this problem existed from the moment I installed
XP and before I obtained updates, including the networking driver
update, so it's probably not related to them.
Everything will be okay for awhile, then suddenly I won't be able to
access the Internet in IE or Firefox, but I will still be able to
collect email in an email client. I am connected to a router, from
there it goes into a voip phone router, then the cable modem. My other
computer (Windows 2000) is also connected to the router and there's no
problems surfing the Internet on it, so I'm almost certain this is
exclusive to the XP.
I've scanned for viruses and malware and the system is clean. The
device manager shows no alerts. I've tried ipconfig and the computer is
assigned it's own IP address, and the gateway, DNS and DHCP servers all
read the same. I've tried releasing the address and reassigning to no
avail. The only thing that works is either rebooting my modem/routers,
or rebooting my computer.
The only thing I noticed in device manager is I have two networking
devices listed, and I'm not sure if that's normal. The first device
reads 1394 Net Adapter. The second is Realtek PCI Fast Ethernet NIC.
Also, under Network Neighborhood, it lists those two devices, plus
another Internet Connection. The Internet Connection icon disappears
during times when I'm unable to access the Internet.
Any more suggestions to try?
Susan
