The 1394 is unlikely to be involved in your internet service, so the NIC 
is the connection being used. Line conditions are often a factor with 
ADSL connections (due to use of phone lines). Cleaning connections often 
helps. As for faster services, it may depend on how many clients use 
that cable. Are there others on it (how many)? Also check if your router 
is using DHCP address assignment. If it is, you may need to set the 
network connection to "Obtain an IP address automatically".
