[pchelpers] Re: Longhorn Explained

Hi!

Anyone looked at the requirements for XP?

XP Home & Professional:
   233Mhz CPU minimum
   300Mhz or higher recommended

   64M memory minimum
   128M or higher recommended

Video card capable of 800x600 resolution (actually, 640x480 can be
used; they just don't don't officially support it)

14.4K modem or faster for internet access.

Windows Server 2003 is the server version of the XP platform.

2003 Web and Standard editions
   133 Mhz CPU minimum
   550 Mhz CPU recommended
   256M mimimum RAM
2003 Enterprise edition
   133 Mhz CPU minimum
   733 Mhz CPU recommended
   256M mimimum RAM
2003 DataCenter edition
   400 Mhz CPU minimum
   733 Mhz CPU recommended
   1G mimimum RAM

The only things definitive, hardware-wise, that I've heard about
Longhorn is that the UI will be able to use the 3D features of modern
video cards, and that it will use DRM feaures built-in to the
hardware. I doubt that the DRM support will be mandatory. For video, I
suspect that by the time Longhorn comes out, DirectX 9 support will be
the minimum requirement.

Aside from that, I'd guess that systems that are on the market now
(even the low-ball ones that are falling out) will meet the minimum
requirements for Longhorn (may need to add more memory, though),
although they may only barely do so, considering the long lead time
for it, and you may not be too crazy about the speed.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
