It seems all Linux distro's have some hardware quirks EG, as of course
does Mac and sometimes Windows, although the latter has the advantage of
the manufacturers producing for the 90+% of the computer market -
Windows. Few id any turn out a Mac or Linux driver on release of their
product - as I read it.

SUSE and Gentoo are the two most respected here in New Zealand. Pure
Debian would run close. During 2005 Ubuntu has taken all the new
converts and even one of the local users groups is having a free install
day in Hamilton on May 7th using Ubuntu principally. Anyone can take
along an older computer (or buy a second-hand one on the site and have
Ubuntu up and running before they leave the site. Most the user groups
in this country are University campus oriented, but are supported in the
wider community. The younger people pick up these new things quicker,
but what I've been impressed with, is the "genuine friendly support!"
Older ones and the ladies appreciate that especially.
When you are summing up what distro to use, consider which one is going
to give you the best support with your peripherals. After that, live
with the idiocincracies of the distro and you'll come to enjoy it. If
you like the interface, but it wont work your printer its no better than
a 2 bob watch. Remember, there are two major interfaces used in
Linux - KDE and Gnome. KDE is very Windows looking. Gnome is as far
away from Windows as possible. KDE the ladies like because if they've
tasted Windows it seems similar and familiar to them and they've already
learned that system, so it seems easier to convert. Boys who like to
play games find it similar. Those who want a complete change from the
memories of Windows nightmares seem to choose a distro that uses Gnome
for its desktop structure. Ubuntu which is Debian based favours Gnome
but KDE is optional and comes with the package although not installed
initially except with the Kubuntu version.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
