I won't say that I've disassembled hundreds, but I have seen some with
cables.  I'd expect that most or all NEW ones do not have cables.  The
ones that I've seen have been very short, maybe an inch or so at the
most, and a PITA to work with.

I've not looked at any laptops new enough to have a SATA drive.

Easy to work on to get to memory and hard drive.  I wouldn't say the
same for any other components, unless they've improved a lot recently.

I'd forgotten how much hard drive prices have come down lately; when a
500MB standard size hard drive can be had for $120, laptop drives
can't be too bad.
