[pchelpers] Re: Laptop died

Scott
Not to dispute Trudy but I have disassembled 100's orLaptops and there
is no cables going to the HDD. MiNi PCI Wireless YES, LCD, YES, and a
few others to keypad etc but no HDD. I am thinking that what Trudy saw
was perhaps a loose Wireless cable or such and in the process of working
on the Laptop reseated the HDD and came to the incorrect conclusion that
it was that cable. The HDD connects directly to the controller then to
the Mobo, so a cable would have no bearing in a Laptop. But since in her
case the wire "repaired" it it is more then likely that changing that
thinking is not going to happen.
I would only try to reseat the HDD first but since Laptops are easy to
work on and easy to get to the source of the issue I am more inclined
to say a bad HDD. And a KG used HDD is under $20 so far from a large
investment to try. Since I get $65.00 per hour I would say the cost of a
HDD is cheaper then Trouble shooting.

That's assuming that the controller didn't go, in which case she threw
money away on a laptop hard drive for a laptop which is basically dead.
Or, as Trudy suggests, a loose cable. Other than that, I agree on the
trouble shooting, though.

It could be a simple matter of blown partition table, although that
leaves the question of what caused it to get damaged.

The recovery disc seems to be assuming that the partition table is
present (since it's expecting E: to be there instead of creating it),
which implies that it's NOT a FULL recovery disc, in which case she
might not have an OS to restore with.
