That's assuming that the controller didn't go, in which case she threw
money away on a laptop hard drive for a laptop which is basically
dead.  Or, as Trudy suggests, a loose cable.  Other than that, I agree
on the trouble shooting, though.

It could be a simple matter of blown partition table, although that
leaves the question of what caused it to get damaged.

The recovery disc seems to be assuming that the partition table is
present (since it's expecting E: to be there instead of creating it),
which implies that it's NOT a FULL recovery disc, in which case she
might not have an OS to restore with.
