update. I looked at the old HDD. it is a Hitachi Travelstar ATA/IDE. the new 
one is EIDE......
  whimper, whimper. The boy at Best Buy said it was the right one.

Yes I replaced the internal HDD. The physical snap in & out was easy. I think I 
need a DOS level driver. I went to Western Digital, but didn't have enough time 
to really follow thru... I copied a file, unzipped, burned to CD, but no go. At
