If you're planning to go to 768MB (a 256MB and a 512MB), you might
want to check that the laptop is able to handle mismatched memory.

Check the warranty and the reputation of the manufacturer. Corsair,
Viking, and Kingston are all fairly well-known. I can't comment on
KBYTE.

Check the timings; more expensive memory can typically be run with
faster timings. If the BIOS setup lists the memory timings and allows
you to change then, check to see what timings it supports, and check
the specs (or test by changing the BIOS settings) of the current
memory to see what timings it supports. There's no point in buying
memory that's faster than what you have already and/or is faster than
the BIOS can support. Buying memory with slower timings will force you
to increase the BIOS timings, thus slowing down your computer a bit.

That's pretty expensive memory, although it may be normal for laptop
memory; might want to give a thought to how much longer you expect to
use the laptop (or how much longer you expect it to run before some
kind of permanent failure occurs). If it's not a new laptop, I'd have
trouble justifying paying that much for memory.

I found this laptop at Sam's Club; it's the cheapest that I can find
that meets my minimums:

http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/viewproduct.jsp?item=945652
AMD Sempron 3000+ (1.8G) (AMD's equivalent of a Celeron)
80G HD
DVD writer
12.1" display.
Not sure how much memory, think it's 512M

They had a 64-bit model last night for the same price, and maybe a
larger screen; I don't see it listed anymore. I don't know anything
about Averatech; I don't know if their laptops are good or not.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
