The hard flat surface makes sense. Something like a Formica, glass or 
metal table would help to disperse the heat. It seems likely that a 
large portion of it is emitted at the bottom of the case where the power 
hungry devices are. Therefore take advantage of cool flat surfaces and 
compare the results.
