[pchelpers] Re: Laptop Heat and Vibration

John, tooshiba is supported on a Wugnet forum. The sysop wrote to this to me
and closed the conversation. Do you agree?

It's hard to tell what might be happening since we're not there. But at boot
time, the system usually checks all the devices on the system - CD/DVD drive,
floppy, etc. Whether the device is ready or not, it usually makes at least a
small "thunk" noise. Could that be the vibration you're speaking of?
On the heat: Systems like this used to be called "laptops" because you could
hold them in your lap comfortably. Then they started getting more powerful and
the power consumption increased (to over 100 watts in some cases, more than an
incandescent light bulb, and you know how hot that gets). So now they call them
"notebooks". The message - the manufacturers do not really expect you to hold
these things on your lap anymore. They're supposed to be on a hard flat
surface. Using one on the couch is probably going to interfere with the
airflow, making things worse.
  Good luck.

If it contains motors (such as in fans or hard drives/CD etc) they can
vibrate a little while revving up to operating speed. Some refer to this
as 'resonance'. This can be caused by slight imbalance of the moving
part or stickiness in its bearings, or even the motor passing through a
speed it was not intended to run at while accelerating.

The result should be a mild vibration that disappears when everything is
fully operational. A similar effect can be experienced when putting a CD
in a CD-ROM drive as it first centers, then spins up.
