I can't say I'm exactly a Linux expert (slooowly getting there), but I have
tried Knoppix out & found it very well thought out. The latest versions of
Linux are pretty much as user-friendly as Windows, but are definitely VERY
different once you start to scratch the surface.
One time I found it invaluable was to recover some lost digital photos on a
friend's Win98 PC that he'd got very ticked off with one day (due to the
usual Windows-type mystery problems that crop up once in a while) &
reinstalled Windows using his (Gateway) recovery CD. Consequently he
(unexpectedly - for him)lost a chunk of data on his drive he hadn't got
around to saving to CD.
Of course the photos were important & I advised him not to use the PC (to
avoid overwriting his photos as the PC started using up HDD space) until I'd
had a look.
I booted the PC off the Knoppix CD & was able to track down his images by
using a command-line Perl script I found (& modified a bit) off the net.
Linux has a nice capability of treating drives as a single, large file if
you want to, so after an hour or so of trolling through the big "file",
voila, my mate had his irreplaceable piccies back.
Try that with Windows!
Jeremy

John,
You are about the 2nd or 3rd person I know to use that definition, other
than myself. We were all in the same 'boat'.
I obtained a set of disks awhile back, hearing the same thing, that you
could run it from them, but was never able to get it to do that. But then,
I am not the sharpest tack on the board. Far from the 'drip' category.
Still have the disks though. Maybe someday I will find the secret and get a
look at this program.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
