I guess you mean start < default programs < associate a file type... 
because in the less geeky is start < default programs < set your default 
programs there is only one column which is automatically in alphabetical 
order. What do you mean with "did not see anything that looked like I 
had to change it.  Nothing suspicious"? Did it say "This program has 0 
out of x defaults"?
