Hi George,

There's more to it than that; half or more of the bandwidth that they
use is bandwidth that *you* pay for, either directly (the connection
from the ISP to your house) or indirectly (the ISP's connection to the
backbone). There's also the matter of needing to pay for more space on
the ISPs mail server to hold the spam until you fetch it.
Certain kinds of spam are also illegal in some areas; by responding to
spam, you are encouraging illegal activity -- activity that the large
majority of people do not want encouraged.
If I happen to see something interesting in a spam email (rarely), I
look for a competing company that provides the same service without
resorting to spam. I tend to feel that if they must spam, then their
product apparently is not good enough to be able to "speak" for
itself. For example, all of the spam ads for Norton / Symantec
antivirus and so forth is another reason to not use their products.
Newspaper ads are not the same; when you buy a newspaper, you do so
with the understanding that the ads are PAYING for the bulk of the
cost, i.e., are significantly reducing the amount that you pay. This
is even more the case with TV ads; they pay for ALL of the expense of
producing and broadcasting the shows, while all you do is make a
one-time purchase of a TV set.
There is only one thing which is appropriate to do to spammers.
Unfortunately, most jurisdictions do not allow boiling in oil as a
means of execution.
