FYI, the cable from the modem to the computer is probably a crossover
cable.

To connect, you'll need to get another ethernet network card (about
$15-25) to put into the Vista computer, get a crossover cable to
connect it to the other computer (you may have trouble finding one; a
computer store can probably build one for you; they may charge about
$10 or so for it), then turn on Internet Connection Sharing.

The next alternative is to get a router; you'd also need 2 network
cables; usually one is provided with the switch, so you'd need one
more (a normal one, not crossover).

The third alternative is a wireless router with 4 ports. Again, a
cable is usually provided, so you wouldn't need anything extra; the
other computer would connect via wireless.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
