[pchelpers] Re: Help!

Clifford,

I would suggest making a startup disk using add/remove programs utility for
Windows. Then I would suggest that you backup any files or programs that you
don't have disks for. Once this is completed, I would format the HD and then
reload Windows as a new install. Next I would then using the backup restore
your files and/or programs and you should have a system that will work far
better than the one that you have now.

Subject: [pchelpers] Help!

I have a serious problem with my computer. I'm hoping someone smarter
than me can help me.

It seems that my computer (a home-built PC with Win98 OS) has been coming
to a screeching halt during the process of loading Windows. The only
alternative has been to reset the machine, resulting in Windows running
Scandisk, which usually fixes the problem. This has been only a minor
inconvenience, up till now.

Recently I installed a flatbed USB scanner. Had all sorts of problems
getting it to run, but it finally DOES work. However, the halting during
the loading of Windows has now become an every time occurrence! :o(

I end up having to use the reset button several times, leading to the
option of loading Windows in "Safe Mode", then restarting the computer.
But the process repeats itself, halting while loading Windows, until the
machine finally decides to do a Scandisk procedure. After this, after
getting the option to load in Safe Mode or "Normal", I choose "Normal"
and the doggone thing finally loads Windows properly. The whole procedure
usually takes up to 20 minutes of running in circles.

This may be too complicated to solve by e-mail, but perhaps somewhere
out there in Cyber space there is a wizard who can give me some ideas.

Hopefully,
