Hi folks,
Are you having problems with Windows Update suddenly telling you that
you need administrator access, if you're using v4, or some other error
(I don't recall what it was) in v5 (the new version, supposedly still
in beta)?
Here's the fix: Insert an "s" at the end of the "http" part of the
address. Then hit the Enter key and watch it work.
Usual v4:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
If that suddenly decides to not work, try this:
httpS://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Usual v5:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
If that suddenly decides to not work, try this:
httpS://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Note that if you go to the new v5 page and let it install the updated
WindowsUpdate software, it will become the default; if you want to use
v4 again, you'll have to explicitly go to the v4 page.
If you install the v5 software, and if you have XP, it'll nag you to
install SP2 RC2, unless you mark it as hidden.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
