Floppies and DVD writers are available; they're called USB floppies
and USB DVD writers.

And I bet that if you compare the cost of replacing the built-in CD
drive with the price of a USB CD drive, the USB drive will be cheaper
than the proprietary built-in one.

Whether or not you can boot from them is another matter; the BIOS must
support doing that.
