I can't believe i didn't see that info in the subject, but unless i'm 
still that blind, i never got Re-Na's message. Here's the download link

When you enter "offline" (in one word) in the search form at
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=184&modelid=11641#SupportDetailAct
the first search result is
ERROR: Printer is offline
When you click that you get this answer, but these are all links with 
more info when you click on them:
1.       Set printer from Offline to Online
2.      Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to ensure a secure connection
3.      Press the POWER button to power on the printer
4.      Select the correct port setting (Windows)
5.      Set the default printer (Windows)
6.      Try a different data cable
