I added it to my links (FFA) pages so that junk submissions would not
affect the real content of my web site. After going through several
pages of them yesterday, I'm glad I did. Some had been there a long time
and were no longer valid. If Google assessed that as part of my site, it
would be a poor reflection on all the work put into it.

The idea behind getting search engine credit is to have your own work
appreciated for what it is- not a list of dubious links that happen to
be on one of your links pages. It can be just as bad if you have valid
links pointing to all sorts of sites with different themes. The search
engines might then have trouble working out where your site ends and
another begins. Is it for instance about PC help, or a Texas cattle
ranch, or someone who makes wooden furniture?

Do you want to give us a link to your article please?

In this way, the tag sets the boundary for your site beyond which the
search engines need not look. You may still have links to other sites,
but if their content is not related to yours, it may be wise to use the tag.
