Hi Billy,
When you remove a drive without dismounting it first, Windows does not
always get a chance to mark it as "clean". The result is that the next
time it's inserted, Windows wants to run CHKDSK. When CHKDSK runs, it
creates a file named either BOOTEX.LOG or BOOTEX.TXT (I forget which).
If it does not show the ".LOG" or ".TXT", then she has Windows set to
"Hide extensions for known file types" (the default setting), which I
think is a poor idea; I typically recommend turning it on.
If this file automatically opens in Notepad, this may be due to her
autorun settings.
Tell her to make a habit of dismounting the drive first, using the
icon in the system tray (near the clock), before removing it; if this
keeps happening, then she's risking data corruption.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
