Hi Billyus,

Z32; thought that sounded familiar; I have one here. Now if I just
had the power adapter for it...

Let's see; the left light is the power light, and the right light is
the paper feed light.

Power Feed
----- -----
Off Off Printer is off; plug in and ess Power button.
On Off Printer is ready to print
On Blink Out of paper
On Blink Paper jam
Blink Blink Carriage has stalled. Check for error messages. Turn
printer off, wait, and turn back on.

When you lift the lid, the carriage should move to the loading
position.

I got this from the user's manual at
http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/z32/enUser95.pdf

It doesn't say anything about a question mark. What happens when you
double-click on that icon? Hopefully it'll give you a message.

One thing that you can do is bend the paper feed tray slightly so that
it comes out. You can then get a better look inside the printer to
see if any paper is visible; you can see almost as much as you can if
you take the cover off, which is a simple matter of removing the 4
screws and lifting the cover up slightly and then out.

If you press on the feed roller arm, you should feel the pressure of a
light spring holding it in place; it should stay there even if you tip
the printer forward. If this doesn't work properly, the top sheet of
paper doesn't get fed.

Looking in the front, you see that the top rollers come in 4 segments
of 2. Looking in the back (with either the paper feed tray or the
cover removed), you should see the 4 springs that pull the top rollers
down. Immediately to the left of the feed roller arm, you should see a
lighter spring; this is for the paper sensor lever. Looking in the
front, you should see the other side of the paper sensor lever,
between the third and fourth roller segments. You may have to
remove the cover, as described above, in order to tell if the lever
moves out of the way properly when paper is inserted under it. If the
lever is broken or jammed, the printer can't properly tell if paper has
been fed and is in the right position.

That'a about all there is to the printer; they're among the simplest
printers that I've seen, mechanically, and also among the easiest to
open. They'd be a lot better if they were built sturdier.

Putting the cover back on the printer is actually a hair harder than
taking it off. Make sure that the lid is closed when you put the cover
back on, and be sure to tuck the cover underneath the paper guide, and
it should then snap into place. Make sure that the lid will open and
close properly before you put the screws in. Considering the
minimalist design, probably the only reason that it needs 4 screws
instead of 2 is because it's relatively flimsy. That's pretty much
the only real problem with the design.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
