Cy,
A manual update means going to the AVG site and downloading the latest 
definitions to the right folder in AVG and then starting AVG and having 
it install the new definitions. I used to do it often because of the 
exact problem Inge is describing. But it seems it is more likely a 
problem on AVG's end with so many having the same difficulty.
