Have you run any checks on the registry since this problem started? 
Someone else I know has a similar problem which seems to be related to 
registry errors. Have you tried running regedit or regclean? There is a 
utility called registry rescue at:
http://www.pcprivacysoftware.com/
It will tell you if you have problems that need fixing.
