I got rid of IE8. I wish I could be sure what caused my problems. I
wouldn't be surprised if it was IE8. Apparently a lot of people are
unhappy with it and uninstalling it. In Vista you can uninstall it by
going to Start>Windows Update>View Update History>Installed
Updates>Uninstall An Update.
